The japanese have believed since ancient times that life dwells in all things.
They believe that even language and the written character contains a soul.
Sugita Koki’s show is the expression of “The breath of a character”.
Says Mr. Koki, “I would like you to feel the fragment of life called Kototama, the character which wriggles like a dragon as if it were alive,
the character in which love overflows warmly”.

Sugita Koki, Japanese Calligrapher and Artist
His art activity is based in Fukuoka
The excitement and impulse of life is the axis of his expression. His work s a reflection of an ancient style and technique combined with a modern pop aesthetic.
Drawing on the history of Japanese writing which developed in Hakata in the 1700’s and rapidly evolved along with the Japanese expressions of Hiragana, Katakana, Wayo-sho, Zenei-sho etc. Sugito Koki preserves the Japanese Sho tradition while also respecting it’s constantly evolving nature and acceptance of global culture. In this way Sugita Koki seeks to express the soul of Japanese Culture.
